Dyes and chemicals used in processing are heavily polluting, and many workers in the industry suffer low wages, discrimination and poor working conditions. For a long time it was impossible to suggest an alternative. For all the problems caused by cotton farming, most synthetic fibres are no more sustainalbe, being based on by-products of oil production. Over the past 10 years innovative and pioneering entrepeneurs and farmers have begun to grow cotton organically, without chemicals. They have also taken us past the brown lumpy eco-look and are now producing clothing that is sutainable, ethical and fashionable.It is now possible for consumers to wear clothing that is good to look at, good to wear and better for those involved in its manufacture.
